With respect to The Bad Seed, Damien remains the ultimate evil kid of cinema: A floppy-haired moppet in Angus Young garb whose family lineage unsurprisingly results in a tremendous amount of turnover in the nanny department. Gregory Peck provides some scene-chewing gravitas, but the late Richard Donner is the real star here, creating a piece of enduring religious terror that isn’t afraid to go way, way over the top.
Horror movies aren’t meant to only be watched in October, but if we’re being real with ourselves, the closer it is Halloween, the scarier a film becomes. Some of that is because we’ve been conditioned our whole lives to think of early autumn as ‘spooky season,’ and that feeling persists even after we’ve grown out of the annual childhood rituals associated with it. Regardless of whether it’s nature or just marketing, though, when the air gets chillier and the days grow darker, there’s really nothing better than drawing the blinds, pulling up your favourite safety blanket, and turning on a good scary movie.
Good thing, then, that there are a lot of them are streaming, especially once October rolls around. With Halloween once again approaching, we’ve scanned five streaming services – Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, Max and dedicated horror streamer Shudder – to scare up a collection of amazingly terrifying films to keep you screaming the whole month through. You'll find everything from bloody entertaining slashers to chilling ghost stories to freaky B-movies. All of them are guaranteed to keep you up at night.
