When it comes to travelling by plane, safety is often a bit of a given. After all, why would you get in a great big metal tube and be launched into the sky if it wasn’t really, really safe? And make no mistake, travelling by plane is, statistically speaking, an exceptionally safe way to get around.

But safety on airplanes is about more than just crashes. A study by AirlineRatings.com, for instance, ranks airlines by taking into account stuff like fleet age, pilot training levels and precautionary measures as well as the number of fatalities and ‘serious incidents’ on-board.

This year’s ‘safest airlines’ study by AirlineRatings.com looked at nearly 400 different carriers and top of the pile was... Qantas! Recognised for having a new fleet and for its innovative, thorough safety measures, Qantas took the top spot from last year’s winner Air New Zealand, which came second. Third was Etihad Airways

Here is the full list of the ten safest airlines in the world, according to AirlineRatings.com.

  1. Qantas
  2. Air New Zealand
  3. Etihad Airways
  4. Qatar Airways
  5. Singapore Airlines
  6. TAP Air Portugal
  7. Emirates
  8. Alaska Airlines
  9. EVA Air
  10. Virgin Australia/Virgin Atlantic

You can find the longer list on AirlineRatings.com’s official site here. And if you’re a nervy flyer? Well, rest assured that the above airlines will likely make you feel the most at-ease.
