Taylor Swift’s stint in Lisbon is set to get underway tonight (May 24) which means the wait is also nearly over for the Swifties of Madrid. And though the Spanish capital is a ridiculously popular travel destination in its own right, what this tour has proved is that Taylor’s presence has a seismic impact on a city – literally in one case, when fans in Seattle basically caused an earthquake.
In Madrid? That’s translated to a tripling in train ticket bookings, according to Trainline. The ticket company said it experienced a significant increase in the number of passengers compared to the week before the concerts. Between Seville and the capital, bookings for the week of Taylor’s Madrid tour dates (May 29 and 30) have tripled, and routes such as Barcelona-Madrid, Valencia-Madrid have doubled.
This phenomenon, where Taylor’s presence leads to a surge in spending on local amenities and services has been dubbed ‘swiftonomics’. In addition to increases in train ticket bookings, ferries and flights, hotels, restaurants and other things to do tend to rake in the cash as well. It’s estimated that concertgoers on the American leg of her tour spend an average of €1,300 per show. Insane, right?
